Zurich certainly isn’t the biggest city in Europe, but, in my mind, it’s bold, beautiful, and feisty. It’s a city with plenty of history, stretching back thousands of years, and there’s lots of old architecture to satisfy history buffs—as well as great lens candy for photographers. But the city doesn’t seem hung up on the past. There is plenty of space for acts of individualism, whether it’s the healthy night life and robust club scene, the artistry of spray-painted walls, or the Viadukt, a zone where funky shops have been built into the archways of, well, an old stone viaduct.
Zurich's lens candy
The day is hot when we join the flow of Zurich’s streets, and we take advantage of the thousand-plus fountains, which runneth over with highly drinkable water. We hop on a street car to the 5th district, where we lunch at Marktelle, a restaurant beneath the arches of the Viadukt. There is no menu, because every day the menu changes (why waste paper?), so we order 5 different dishes and share them. The food is super fresh and beyond delicious, whether it’s the pork pie, the mixed greens, or the finale, dessert.
With the heat at its apex, we take a dip at the Unterer Letten, a bathing area on the river Limmat, which has change rooms, showers, and plenty of spots to jump in to cool off. Built in 1909, it was a guys-only spot until 1928 (Yay, 1928!).
We wander along the Viadukt, not so much seeking out landmarks as allowing the city to wash over us. Down the way, we spot colourful umbrellas suspended above an alleyway and find ourselves at the Hive, one of Zurich’s famous night spots. It’s closed, but the manager kindly shows us around the club’s various spaces, including a room with a wall stacked with speakers and old-fashioned radios of all shapes and sizes.
Interesting features of the Hive
Having only 24 hours to wander around the city feels more like speed dating than a proper get to know you, but I’m glad we’ve had the chance to meet Zurich. Our team is unanimously inspired by the city, and we’re already conspiring to return in the not-too-distant future.
