Jimmy, Zach and I have finally arrived on the island of Dominica and we are quick to let the beauty and candor of first impressions carry us through the day.
The most striking of first impressions, at least for me, is what I am going to call from here on out, mostly because I expect if not hope to speak of it again, island hospitality. Although I am sure the phrase exists it is nonetheless new to me.
Of course the general idea of being hospitable is not new to me, especially given the parents I grew up with; however, hospitality of the island variety is not something I am accustomed to, and to be honest, I am not sure exactly what it means yet.
Given my oh-so-very expert knowledge now that I have been on the island for a total of 6 hours, I suspect that island hospitality has something to do with smiling.
Everyone I meet carries a smile or at the very least not a frown. However, I cannot be certain if smiling is at the root of island hospitality. Smiling could very well be a symptom of something more benevolent, something more culturally enlightening.
Regardless, I promise that over the course of the next week I will do my best to find out what makes up island hospitality.
Along the way, I am sure I will have many more first impressions and hope to share them with you along the way.
