Vibrations Could Create Clean Power
By Krishna RauEvery move you make could soon be used to cleanly power the world.
Researchers in Britain are testing the green technology, known as energy harvesting, in places as diverse as oil refineries and discos.
According to The Observer newspaper, Dr. Steve Beeby of Southampton University has installed harvesters at several oil refineries. The harvesters take the normal vibrations from pipes and pumps and convert them into energy to power sensors monitoring the operations of the refineries.
Other researchers are working on pacemakers that are powered by the beating of the heart, removing the need for the devices to be replaced.
Even London’s Bar Surya has installed harvesters beneath its dance floor and uses the energy generated by dancers’ feet to save money on its electric bill.
